It's always a little daunting when faced with a blank canvas--or a blank page as is the case for me now. It takes me a while for the words to formulate. But when it comes to houses, the raw space is what gets my juices flowing.
I see an empty space and I start day-dreaming about how I would decorate or renovate if I lived there. My brain starts churning and I'm flooded with ideas of different directions the space could take. "We could take down that wall! No, let's leave the wall, but move all the furniture over there. Or better yet! Let's throw out all the furniture and turn this into a yoga studio! Oh I know! I saw this amazing piece last week that would be perfect in here." Are you starting to see the lunacy?
But that's where you come in. Those bare walls aren't about me, they are about your dreams and desires. While I might be spinning off in two hundred different directions, your voice is what brings me back down to earth. I open my ears and eyes to see the room through your eyes and with your heart. That is, after all, my ultimate mission: to help you realize your dreams.
When the clients for this bathroom came to me and said, "We have an idea!" It was their vision to push the shower into the closet and build out into the bedroom for more closet space. What they wanted was more space, a more luxurious shower experience and more storage for all of the products they use (as part of their work). What they hadn't considered was opening up the bathroom even more, letting in light from the one window that had previously been hidden in the water closet. And exposure to natural sunlight, especially in the morning, can aid in sleep at night. It helps the body produce serotonin and fight off Seasonal Affective Disorder as well as promote healing and productivity. Sounds like a great way to start the day to me!
It's a small bathroom in an old house and the door to the toilet was always in the way. It was either closed, making the bathroom feel that much smaller and darker or it was open, taking up space. We took out the door, knocked down the wall between the shower and toilet and let the sunshine in! Not only do these clients get their big steam shower, they get to enjoy it with natural light and a more open feel throughout the whole bathroom.
The client was really excited about using warm-toned metals and contrasting with black and white neutrals. We went with an extra large subway tile for the shower walls. The unexpected scale makes the classic tile feel more modern. The antique copper finish we chose for the plumbing fittings is just warm and rosy enough without being too pink and then I found the most amazing grey and copper toned stone for the vanity top to tie it all together!
The final product is amazing! Open, modern, spa-like and functional. Plenty or storage, sunshine and space to start and end the day feeling calm, productive and ready to tackle anything. If I've done my job well, I'll have given the clients what they wanted as well as what they didn't even know they needed.
Wouldn’t you like to start your day off on the right foot? Let’s all vow to spend 30 minutes in the sunshine (or at least fresh air, if the sun is hard to find) every morning. Who’s with me?
